Whole Food Supplements for Healthy Skin

How is our skin, the largest organ in our body, affected by the supplements we take?

This article hints at some answers to these key questions that in today’s nutrition lingo have multiple and confusing answers for many men and women that once they have made a conscious decision to take control of their proper nutrition, they are still left with the challenge of searching for basic facts among the many commercial, marketing and propaganda literature. The two most important questions we would like you to think as you go through the article are:

  • Do I feel healthier and stronger as I grow older?
  • What can I do to continue on that path and enjoy the great pleasures of life?

At Active Skin Care Studio, we believe that health skin is like a symphony concert where many independent pieces need to come together to have a masterful performance. Any instrument by itself can not create that masterful symphony concert; it requires coordination, timing and synergy across all instruments and human talent to create a master piece performance. Our body is not very different from a symphony, it behaves in a very similar manner to perform in the “symphony” of daily life: it requires nutrients (the instruments) that together create a whole (a masterpiece symphony) larger than its individual parts. So the objective should be to provide the best quality of nutrients to allow ourselves to outperform our expectations.

Recent health statistics show that the rates of some forms of chronic disease have not changed among the US population. While the rates of other diseases have actually increased, despite the growing industry of food supplements (individual nutrients) available in the market that where originally conceived to work as illness preventive agents. These facts indicate that the growing population is not paying enough attention to proper nutrition. It also indicates that in spite of the growing number of people that are now more consciously looking at nutrition, the market of food supplements leaves them confused in the current sea of miss-information and marketing. In this article we try to help those that are serious about taking control of their nutrition by establishing the basic facts for comparing the characteristics of nutrients available in the market.

Our body like any living organ goes through three cyclic modes during the day:

  • From early morning to early afternoon, the body flushes all dead cells accumulated in the organism due to the natural wear and tear from the body’s daily activity and to a natural organ’s self-healing process cycle. (This cycle is different for each organ and its purpose is to rebuild the organ over time completely,)
  • From early afternoon to early night, the body absorbs as many nutrients as possible to have enough material to support the natural daily self-healing process,
  • From early night to early morning, usually associated with our sleep, the body enters into building mode and every single cell of every organ start a self-healing using all nutrients to replace the cells that have naturally decayed or died during the day.

You can now see what important role nutrients play in the whole process. The better the nutrients we provide our body, the faster and healthier the self-healing process.  Consequently our body will be better prepared to perform the various functions demanded from it the next day.

Most researchers on nutrition agree on at least six basic concepts that will provide proper support for the human body’s healing process:

  • Whole foods are better for you than refined foods. This implies that nutrients and supplements with whole food basis are much better than synthetic based or isolated nutrients. This will sound as bad news to the people that have been taking refined vitamins hoping to get improved health. The truth is that synthetic vitamins have been robbed of all of the extra accessory nutrients that a whole food vitamin will bring along naturally. So bad new do not stop there, just like refined foods, isolated vitamins can create numerous problems and imbalances in the body if taken at high levels for long periods of time. Eventually, they will act more like drugs, forcing the consumer to become dependant on them. At the very least, they won’t help you as much as high quality food and food-based supplements.
  • Isolated supplements lack all natural key ingredients. Whole food supplements are made from concentrated whole foods, hence they preserve the vitamins key additional components, like a variety of enzymes, co enzymes, antioxidants, trace elements, activators and many other unknown or undiscovered factors that they come naturally combined with the vitamins. All these nutrient components work together synergistic-ally as a vitamin complex to support the self healing process of the human body. In other words, only life can create life, and science has not yet been able to replicate the natural conditions of vitamins to maximize their effectiveness.
  • Synthetic or Isolated nutrients are not natural and cannot be found by themselves in nature. Hence, the body identifies them as foreign nutrients “drugs” and treats them like that. Most processes to create synthetic nutrients involve a wide array of potentially nasty solvents and other chemicals that help isolate nutrients from the foods they naturally come in. Therefore, taking high amounts of these products can also expose the human body to these potentially toxic chemicals, if care is not taken to remove them during the isolation process.
  • A natural vitamin complex is designed to work on a synergistic manner. Supplement makers typically try to stuff as much as possible in a capsule, telling us that the more we take, the better it is for us. This is simply not the case. As you now know, it is not necessarily the amount of a nutrient you ingest that is important, but its form and how much is bio-available that counts the most. In fact, remembering that ingesting single nutrients can actually create imbalances in the body, logic would dictate the higher the level of a single nutrient that you take in, the quicker this imbalance will occur. Making the whole greater than the sum of the parts.
  • The basic of a healthy life must be in place. Proper diet, exercise, detoxification, structure, mental/emotional and spiritual health elements must all be in order for true self healing to occur. No supplement will work on its own if these foundations are not in place. Even in extreme healing cases, like shocks to the body, food based nutrients are needed in the accelerated healing process.

Wisdom must apply when it comes to choosing the right nutrients to take as dietary supplement. If you like to have a few hints to differentiate the good from the bad, you must look for natural nutrients, as close to their natural form, that will support more efficiently the body’s self-healing process. Investigate and ask about the process that is followed to produce them, make sure that the utmost care has been taken in all phases of its production, from growing its ingredients, to manufacturing, testing for potency and quality control. Finally, close the loop and investigate the companies that produce and distribute the nutrients, they must have a long track record of providing high quality products that produce good clinical results.
